Thaipusam in Penang

Wow, there's a lot going on here. I'll post a map later after I mark out the street closures, etc.

We walked to the downtown streets where the Silver Chariot and the Golden Chariot were proceeding from downtown to the temples near the botanic gardens. Lots of activity there and plenty of chances to see the chariots and the dances, etc., that proceeded (albeit slowly).

In 2024, the chariots could be tracked online at:

- Silver Chariot : https://chariot.byebyte.org/map

- Golden Chariot : https://pheb.digitalpenang.my/map

New Year's in Penang

well, the malls (Gurney Plaza, Gurney Paragon, Queesnbay, etc. et. al.) are decorated and festive. There are fireworks on the night before at various spots.

Ang Mo Kio MRT

Plus Code 9R9X+XR Singapore

AMK Hub (9R9X+R9 Singapore): In the basement, you can find Malaysia Boleh (9R9X+QJ Singapore). We liked the smooth and soft ice in the Cendol here. Rojak was fine. Also at the same B2 level, there is a stall selling Mee Siam and Mee Rebus which are good.

Outside, we liked Penang Savour (9RCW+9X Singapore) for it's Penang Laksa. The Nasi Lemak was good also. The cendol was a better serving size compared to Malaysia Boleh, but, the ice was not as soft or smooth. The Hor Fun (wat tan hor) was delicious, but, I have to add the pickled chilies for an extra layer of flavor.

We liked the chicken set at 711 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8. the bakery next to Penang Savour

Redhill MRT

Plus Code 7RQ8+PQ Singapore

Redhill Food Centre (7RP9+W7 Singapore): we basically came here for Mee Siam from Jia Xiang Mee Siam #01-35. Excellent. Then we also had to sample the Cheong Fun next door. After drinks, we also had Soya Bean Curd which was also good but not very smooth.

Chinatown MRT

Plus Code 7RMV+RC Singapore

So many food places within walking distance (if I say so myself)

People's Park Food Centre (7RMV+X2 Singapore): We had kway teow, chicken rice, chicken set, etc. at this food centre and loved every bite

Hong Lim Food Centre (7RPW+58 Singapore): We've been back here a few times. The Outram Park Fried Kway Teow queue is always long and we never waited. the Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee is good and we've had it several time. We'd have preferred shredded chicken though.

Hawker Chan (7RMV+65 Singapore): sorry, we weren't exactly blown away with the dishes

Old Amoy Cendol (7RMV+26 Singapore): we liked the price and flavors of this cendol

Maxwell Food Centre (7RJV+4W Singapore): the Maxwell MRT (7RJV+7J Singapore) will be closer when it is operational. What's good here? Hu Ru Beverages, Ah Lim Nasi Lemak #01-61, Rojak #01-56, Curry Puffs from the lady on the first row of stalls. The Sisaket Thai Food #01-85 was a hunger saver when a lot of stalls were closed for Chinese New Year's Eve with their Pad Thai and Basil Fried Rice.

Telok Ayer MRT

Plus Code 7RJX+QF Singapore

Lau Pa Sat (7VJ2+75 Singapore): is the go to place for food downtown. We made the mistake of looking for satay on a weekday BEFORE 7pm. No satay before 7pm here. On weekends satay starts about 3pm.

We visited this place many times, mostly for Ice Kachang. The Number One Cendol is good, but, a bit pricey in my opinion. We had curry chicken from Ipoh Chicken, pad thai from another stall (could be better)

Bayfront MRT

Plus Code 7VJ5+GH Singapore

Okay. Satay by the Bay (7VJ9+VG Singapore) is not close. It's 1.8 km and a 22 minute walk. When we visited in February 2022, it was a bit sad. It seemed that there wasn't a lot of stalls open and not a lot of eaters or patrons. The satay was good as always, but only two satay stalls were there unlike what I remember from years ago.
