How do I use pool.ntp.org?

If you just want to synchronise your computers clock to the network, the configuration file (for the ntpd program from the ntp.org distribution, on any supported operating system - Linux, *BSD, Windows and even some more exotic systems) is really simple:

The 0, 1 and 2.pool.ntp.org names point to a random set of servers that will change every hour. Make sure your computer's clock is set to something sensible (within a few minutes of the 'true' time) - you could use ntpdate pool.ntp.org, or you could just use the date command and set it to your wristwatch. Start ntpd, and after some time (this could take as long as half an hour!), ntpq -pn should output something like:

The IP addresses will be different, because you've been assigned random timeservers. The essential thing is that one of the lines starts with an asterisk (*), this means your computer gets the time from the internet - you'll never have to worry about it again!

As pool.ntp.org will assign you timeservers from all over the world, time quality will not be ideal. You get a bit better result if you use the continental zones (For example europe, north-america, oceania or asia.pool.ntp.org), and even better time if you use the country zone (like ch.pool.ntp.org in Switzerland) - for all these zones, you can again use the 0, 1 or 2 prefixes, like 0.ch.pool.ntp.org. Note, however, that the country zone might not exist for your country, or might contain only one or two timeservers. If you know timeservers that are really close to you (measured by network distance, with traceroute or ping), time probably will be even better.

If you're using a recent Windows version, you can also use the ntp client that is built into the system. Just execute:

net time /setsntp:pool.ntp.org

With some versions of Windows you can also specify more than one server

net time /setsntp:"0.pool.ntp.org 1.pool.ntp.org 2.pool.ntp.org"

at the command prompt. This is known to work on Windows 2000/XP/2003. The same can be achieved by, as administrator, right-clicking the clock in the taskbar, selecting 'Adjust Date/Time' and entering the server name in the 'Internet Time' tab.

Meinberg made a port of the ntp daemon for windows.

Additional Notes

If you have a static IP address and a reasonable Internet connection (bandwidth is not so important, but it should be stable and not too highly loaded), please consider donating your server to the server pool. It doesn't cost you more than a few hundred bytes per second traffic, but you help this project survive. Please read the joining page for more information.

If your Internet provider has a timeserver, or if you know of a good timeserver near you, you should use that and not this list - you'll probably get better time and you'll use fewer network resources. If you know only one timeserver near you, you can of course use that and two from pool.ntp.org or so.

It can rarely happen that you are assigned the same timeserver twice - just restarting the ntp server usually solves this problem. If you use a country zone, please note that it may be because there is only one server known in the project - better use a continental zone in that case. You can browse the zones to see how many servers we have in each zone.

Be friendly. Many servers are provided by volunteers, and almost all time servers are really file or mail or webservers which just happen to also run ntp. So don't use more than three time servers in your configuration, and don't play dirty tricks with burst or minpoll - all you will gain is that this project will be stopped sooner or later.

Make sure that the time zone configuration of your computer is correct. ntpd itself does not do anything about the time zones, it just uses UTC internally.

If you are synchronising a network to pool.ntp.org, please set up one of your computers as a time server and synchronize the other computers to that one. (you'll have some reading to do - it's not difficult though. And there's always the comp.protocols.time.ntp newsgroup.)

How to Install FFmpeg in Linux ~The Easy Way~

FFmpeg is so important if you are planning to run a video website with streaming with conversion of video files to different video formats. This tutorial is intended for Centos/Redhat versions of Linux where any novice user can install ffmpeg without compiling the source which is a more traditional way of installing the FFmpeg software on linux servers. In this tutorial i will show you the easy way to install ffmpeg and ffmpeg-php (php extension) with just yum rather than compiling ffmpeg from source files.

Installing FFMpeg

yum install ffmpeg ffmpeg-devel

If you get package not found, then you will need to add few lines in the yum repository for dag packages installation. Create a file named dag.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d with the following contents on it

If everything is fine, then the installation should proceed smoothly. If not you will get something like warning GPG public key missing .

then most commonly you have GLIB 2.3 installed instead of GLIB 2.4 version. To check the current GLIB version installed on your server. just use

yum list glib*

and it should list the latest GLIB package version.

The reason i was getting this error was my rpmforge packages was pointed to centos 5 versions instead of centos 4.6.

To fix dependency error:

To fix this error, you might need to check your rpmforge packages compatible to the release of your existing CentOS version.
Check the file /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmforge.repo and it should look like for Centos 4.6(Final). If you have lines like http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/mirrors-rpmforge you might need to make changes to the rpmforge.repos like shown below

Note: Backup the original rpmforge.repo file before you edit its content.

Once this is done, do again yum install ffmpeg.

This trick resolved the problem in my linux box running Centos 4.6 and this is the only way i found to install ffmpeg using yum.

Install FFMPEG-PHP Extension

FFmpeg-php is a very good extension and wrapper for PHP which can pull useful information about video through API interface. Inorder to install it you will need to download the source file and then compile and install extension in your server. You can download the source tarball : http://ffmpeg-php.sourceforge.net/

Common Errors

1. If you get command not found error for phpize, then you will need to do yum install php-devel

2. If you get error like "ffmpeg headers not found" while configuring the source.

configure: error: ffmpeg headers not found. Make sure ffmpeg is compiled as shared libraries using the --enable-shared option

then it means you have not installed ffmpeg-devel packages.

To Fix: Just install ffmpeg-devel using

yum install ffmpeg-devel

3. If you get an error like shared libraries not found problem and the program halts in the middle, then you must specify the ffmpeg installed path explicitly to the ./configure.

configure: error: ffmpeg shared libraries not found. Make sure ffmpeg is compiled as shared libraries using the --enable-shared option

To Fix:

1. First find out the ffmpeg path with ffmpeg --help command. The prefix default path should be like /usr/local/cpffmpeg
2. Configure the FFmpeg-php with --with-ffmpeg option

./configure --with-ffmpeg=/usr/local/cpffmpeg

That should resolve the problem!
Editing PHP.INI

Once you have done that without any problems then you will see the php extension file /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/ffmpeg.so and you will need mention that extension in php.ini file

nano /usr/local/lib/php.ini

Put the below two lines at the end of the php.ini file

Then restart the server service httpd restart

To check whether ffmpeg enabled with php, point your browser to test.php file. It should show the confirmation of installed ffmpeg php extension

If any case the ffmpeg does not show in the phpinfo() test make sure that php.ini path to ffmpeg.so is correct. Still the problem occurs, the reason could be you might be using older versions of ffmpeg-php which is buggy. Just download the latest version of ffmpeg-php source then compile it.
Installing Mplayer + Mencoder

Just issue the following yum commands to install the rest of the packages.

yum install mplayer mencoder
Installing FlvTool2

Flvtool2 is a flash video file manipulation tool. It can calculate metadata and can cut and edit cue points for flv files.

If you are on Centos 5 try yum install flvtool2 with dag repository and if you get package not found you will need to manually download and compile the flvtool2. You can download latest version of flvtool2 here: http://rubyforge.org/projects/flvtool2/

If you get command not found error, it probably means that you dont have ruby installed.

Thats it! Once ffmpeg works fine with php extension, download a sample video, convert to .flv format in the command line and plug it to flowplayer to see it work on your web browser. Try also to download the video file offline and see whether the converted flv file works well with both audio and video.

1. Hold down the Go button as you turn on the power switch.
2. Keep the button pressed until the Toner, Drum and Paper LED's light up.
3. Release the Go button, the LED's will go off.
4. Press the Go button six times.

All the LED's will light up to indicate the network card has been reset.

Reset Your Brother

Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps:
Turn the printer off.
Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
Release the 'go' button.
Press the 'go' button 2 times.
Pause.
Press the 'go' button 5 times.
The toner light should be off.
The paper light should be on.
Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.



This is a very good solution. However, it should add "until all lights are off" after the the second step "Release the 'go' button"

Port Testing

This article describes how to telnet to port 25 on a computer that runs Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) services to troubleshoot SMTP communication problems. The information in this article, including error messages, only applies to issues when attempting to resolve SMTP communication issues with Microsoft Exchange-based servers and is not intended for general troubleshooting purposes.

You can use the following troubleshooting steps that are appropriate for the type of problem that you are experiencing. For example, if you are having problems sending over SMTP between two of your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server servers, you can test the SMTP connectivity by using Telnet on the sending server to connect to port 25 on the destination server. By default, SMTP listens on port 25. Alternatively, if you are having problems receiving SMTP mail from the Internet, you can follow the steps that are listed in this article to test connectivity to your SMTP server from a host that resides on the Internet and that is not on your network.

NOTE: This article only outlines information for a connectivity test for messaging with Exchange Server, if you are not able to connect to the Exchange Server, please search the KB for other symptoms or error messages you are experiencing. There are several different variations of SMTP in the Microsoft product line. The Microsoft Windows product line has an SMTP service that is included with Internet Information Services (IIS), and in Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, the SMTP service was included in the Option Pack. In more recent versions of Windows, IIS has been integrated in the operating system, and you can add IIS by using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Additionally, Exchange 2000 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 use the existing SMTP service from IIS with additional features. Microsoft Exchange Server versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5 all come with their own versions of SMTP in the form of the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) or Internet Mail Service (IMS).

Note In Exchange 5.0 and later, the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) is renamed the Internet Mail Service.

Before you start the Telnet session, you must have the full SMTP e-mail address of the destination user who you want to send this test message to. This e-mail address must be in the following format:
User@Site.Domain.com
You must also have the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or the IP address of the server computer that is running the SMTP services (for example, 10.120.159.1). If the servers are in your organization, you may already have this information. If the servers are external, the easiest way to find this information is to use Nslookup.exe to find the DNS records that contain this information. Make sure that SMTP has started on the server that runs the SMTP service. To test if SMTP has started, you can run the basic tests that are listed in this article and verify that you receive the 220 response from the remote server. This also verifies that SMTP is running.

Notes
  • Some Telnet applications require you to turn on local echoing to see the commands that you are typing. To do this while in a Microsoft Telnet session, type set local_echo at the command prompt.
  • In Microsoft Windows XP, type set localecho instead of set local_echo.

Basic Testing

Follow these steps to make sure that the host computer and the remote SMTP server can communicate. If you receive the following error message after you type any one of the following commands, the SMTP server does not recognize what you typed because of a syntax error or an erroneous command:
500 Command not recognized
Check the command and type it again or verify that you are communicating directly to a Microsoft SMTP server.

Note Microsoft Telnet does not permit you to use the Backspace key. If you make a mistake when you type a command, you must press ENTER, and then start a new command.

In the following steps, you run Telnet from the command line. To open a command line, Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
  1. You can start a Telnet session by using the Telnet command in the following format:

    Note Press ENTER after you type each line.
    telnet servername portnumber
    For example, type:
    telnet mail.contoso.com 25
    Note You can replace servername with the IP address or the FQDN of the SMTP server that you want to connect to. Remember to press ENTER after each command.

    If the command works, you receive a response from the SMTP server that is similar to the following:
    220 site.contoso.com Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Connector 
    Note There are different versions of Microsoft SMTP or third party SMTP servers, and you may receive different responses from the receiving server. What is important is that you receive the 220 response with the FQDN of the server and the version of SMTP. Additionally, all versions of Microsoft SMTP include the term "Microsoft" in the 220 response.
  2. Start communication by typing the following command:
    EHLO test.com
    Note You can use the HELO command, but EHLO is a verb that exists in the Extended SMTP verb set that is supported in all current Microsoft implementations of SMTP. It is a good idea to use EHLO, unless you believe that there is a problem with the Extended SMTP Verbs.

    If the command is successful, you receive the following response:
    250 OK
  3. Type the following command to tell the receiving SMTP server who the message is from:
    MAIL FROM:Admin@test.com
    Note This address can be any SMTP address that you want, but it is a good idea to consider the following issues:
    1. Some SMTP mail systems filter messages based on the MAIL FROM: address and may not permit certain IP addresses to connect or may not permit the IP address to send e-mail to the SMTP mail system if the connecting IP address does not match the domain where the SMTP mail system resides. In this example, that domain is test.com.
    2. If you do not use a valid e-mail address when you send a message, you cannot determine if the message had a delivery problem, because the non-delivery report (NDR) cannot reach an IP address that is not valid. If you use a valid e-mail address, you receive the following response from the SMTP server:
      250 OK - MAIL FROM Admin@test.com
  4. Type the following command to tell the receiving SMTP server whom the message is to.

    Note It is a good idea to always use a valid recipient SMTP address in the domain that you are sending to. For example, if you are sending to john@domain.com, you must be certain that john@domain.com exists in the domain. Otherwise, you will receive an NDR.

    Type the following command with the SMTP address of the person you want to send to:
    RCPT TO: User@Domain.Com
    You receive the following response:
    250 OK - Recipient User@ Domain.Com
  5. Type the following command to tell the SMTP server that you are ready to send data:
    DATA
    You receive the following response:
    354 Send data. End with CRLF.CRLF
  6. You are now ready to start typing the 822/2822 section of the message. The user will see this part of the message in their inbox. Type the following command to add a subject line:
    Subject: test message
    Press ENTER two times. You do not receive a response from this command.

    Note The two ENTER commands comply with Request for Comments (RFC) 822 and 2822. 822 commands must be followed by a blank line.
  7. Type the following command to add message body text:
    This is a test message you will not see a response from this command.
  8. Type a period (.) at the next blank line, and then press ENTER. You receive the following response:
    250 OK
  9. Close the connection by typing the following command:
    QUIT
    You receive the following response:
    221 closing connection
  10. Verify that the recipient received the message that you sent. If any error event messages appear in the application event log, or if there are problems receiving the message, check the configuration or the communication to the host.

Advanced Testing

In addition to the basic testing steps that are listed in this article, you can use a delivery receipt to test mail in both directions. You can use this method to verify that the SMTP server can accept an inbound connection and generate a delivery receipt back to the sender to test outbound connectivity of the SMTP server.

To request a delivery receipt for the test message, see step 4 in the "Basic Testing" section of this article to make sure that the information provided is a valid e-mail address that can receive the delivery receipt. Then in step 5 in the "Basic Testing" section of this article, type the following command in the Telnet session:
